Overview

ESL Price Sync: Deterministic Retail Shelf-Edge Pricing Architecture

Synchronizes ERP/POS prices with electronic shelf label fleets using SHA256 delta hashing and idempotent, monotonically versioned updates. Rate-limits RF gateway transmissions and models battery life to protect tag lifespan. Use when integrating a price master with an ESL platform, debugging ghost pricing, or planning refresh schedules against tag battery budgets; not for e-commerce pricing decisions or unverified single-tag hardware faults.

What it does

ESL Price Sync keeps real-time parity between an ERP/POS price master and an Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) fleet - vendors like SES-imagotag, ZKONG, Pricer, Hanshow, and SOLUM - across the five-tier pipeline a price update travels: Price Master, Transform Middleware, ESL Server, Base Station, and finally the physical tag over Sub-GHz or 2.4GHz RF. Every payload carries a deterministic trace_id across all five layers, because a 200 OK from the ESL server API is never treated as proof that the physical shelf display actually changed.

Updates are generated as strict deltas, not full catalog pushes: a SHA256 row hash is computed per SKU from price, promo price, currency, unit of measure, barcode, and template ID, and only rows whose hash changed are queued for transmission - a full 50,000-SKU push is reserved for initial store commissioning or disaster recovery. Every transmission carries an idempotency_key and a monotonically increasing ISO 8601 version_timestamp; if an incoming payload's timestamp is not strictly newer than the last applied version, middleware discards it to prevent out-of-order packets from reverting a price.

def compute_sku_hash(item: dict) -> str:
    payload = f"{item['sku']}:{item['price']}:{item['promo_price']}:{item['uom']}:{item['template']}"
    return hashlib.sha256(payload.encode('utf-8')).hexdigest()

Battery life is treated as a hard design constraint: each e-paper refresh costs 12-25 microamp-hours, a dual-CR2450 pack provides roughly 960mAh usable capacity, and capping refreshes to 3 per day is what buys a 5.5-7 year tag lifespan. Gateway transmissions are rate-limited to at most 150 tag updates per minute per base station to avoid RF collision retries draining batteries. Diagnostic and reconciliation work defaults to read-only audit mode - producing a discrepancy report of SKU, ERP price, gateway ACK price, and which layer diverged - with state-changing writes requiring explicit operator consent.

When to use - and when NOT to

Use it when designing, implementing, or auditing the integration between an enterprise retail price master (SAP, Oracle Retail, Dynamics 365, Lightspeed) and an ESL server platform: building an idempotent delta feed for ZKONG or SES-imagotag, debugging ghost pricing where POS doesn't match the shelf tag, scheduling promotional pricing with automatic rollback, or calculating battery-life depletion curves for e-paper tags under a given refresh frequency.

Do not use it for e-commerce storefronts or the pricing-decision algorithms themselves - this skill governs faithful delivery of an already-decided price to physical tags. It is not for troubleshooting an individual dead tag before gateway RF coverage and signal strength have been verified, and it does not perform live writes to a production fleet without a preceding read-only audit pass.

Inputs and outputs

Inputs are the ERP/POS price feed, the current per-SKU watermark hashes, tag/template metadata, and gateway rate limits. Output is a rate-limited stream of idempotent delta payloads (or, in dry-run mode, a count of changed versus unchanged SKUs), a reconciliation audit report listing any ghost-pricing divergence by SKU and the layer where it diverged, and a battery-longevity estimate in years for a given refresh schedule and ambient temperature.

Integrations

Works with ESL platforms including SES-imagotag, ZKONG, Pricer, Hanshow, and SOLUM, and with enterprise price masters including SAP, Oracle Retail, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Lightspeed.

Who it's for

Retail systems integrators and engineers building or auditing the pipeline that keeps electronic shelf labels matched to the price master - designing delta and idempotency logic, diagnosing ghost pricing, and managing tag battery life against refresh frequency.
