Overview
mnemo is a local-first AI memory layer that runs as a sidecar service. It watches the conversations you feed it, extracts named entities and relationships with an LLM, builds a persistent knowledge graph in SQLite and injects relevant context back into future prompts in under 50 ms. It ships as a single static binary. Use it when you build custom LLM pipelines and need persistent, structured, local memory you fully control. If a managed agent harness already handles memory for you, you do not need it.
What it does
mnemo is a local-first AI memory layer for any LLM. LLM apps built on custom pipelines have no persistent memory between sessions. mnemo is a sidecar service that watches every conversation you feed it, extracts named entities and relationships using an LLM, builds a persistent knowledge graph in SQLite, and injects relevant context back into future prompts, automatically and in under 50 ms. It works with Ollama (fully local and free), OpenAI, Anthropic or any OpenAI-compatible API, and ships as a single static binary with zero cloud dependency and no Python runtime.
The flow has five steps. You POST raw text to /ingest: a conversation turn, a document or a note. mnemo sends it to your configured LLM and extracts entities (people, tools, places, concepts) and the relationships between them. Entities are deduplicated by name and type, aliases are merged, and everything is written to SQLite while the in-memory petgraph is updated atomically. On POST /retrieve a six-stage pipeline runs: full-text chunk search, entity name search, graph expansion (BFS over the knowledge graph), relation filter, score and rank, and assembly of a context_prompt string. You inject context_prompt into your LLM's system prompt.
The graph layer is the differentiator. Entities are deduplicated across sessions, relationships are weighted and traversed at query time, and graph-expanded results score at 0.5x so direct matches always rank higher than inferred ones. Storage in SQLite survives restarts.
When to use - and when NOT to
Use it when you are building custom LLM pipelines and need persistent, structured, local memory that you fully control.
It is not for everyone. If you use a managed agent harness that handles memory for you, you do not need it.
Entity extraction uses an LLM: point MNEMO_LLM_BASE_URL at Ollama, OpenAI or another OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The DELETE /wipe endpoint deletes all memory irreversibly and requires the header X-Confirm-Wipe: true.
When the LLM is unreachable, entity extraction is skipped and memories are still stored as text chunks.
Inputs and outputs
All endpoints accept and return application/json at http://localhost:8080. The endpoints are GET /health, POST /ingest, POST /retrieve, GET /entities (paginated), GET /entities/:id, DELETE /entities/:id (cascades), GET /entities/:id/neighbors (depth up to 5), GET /chunks, GET /chunks/:id, DELETE /chunks/:id, POST /search (full-text search over entities and chunks), DELETE /wipe and GET /stats.
An ingest request needs content and source (such as chat, email or cli) and optionally session_id and metadata. A retrieval query needs text and optionally session_id, with defaults of max_chunks 10, max_entities 20, min_confidence 0.5, include_graph true and graph_depth 2. The output is a ranked RetrievalResult including the context_prompt.
Configuration precedence puts environment variables over TOML values. Defaults are MNEMO_DB_PATH mnemo.db, MNEMO_PORT 8080, MNEMO_LLM_BASE_URL http://localhost:11434/v1, MNEMO_LLM_MODEL llama3, MNEMO_LLM_API_KEY ollama and MNEMO_LLM_PROVIDER ollama (also openai, anthropic or custom). A config file is passed with --config path/to/config.toml, with [llm] settings for timeout (30 seconds), retries (3), max tokens (2048) and temperature (0.1). GET /health reports the active config_source.
Measured on Apple M2 with SQLite WAL mode and a debug build (a release build is 3-5 times faster): entity insert about 0.12 ms, full-text chunk search about 0.28 ms, graph neighbor at depth 2 about 0.89 ms and the full retrieval pipeline about 4.2 ms.
Integrations
The fully free path uses Docker and Ollama. Pull the llama3 model the first time, about 4 GB:
git clone https://github.com/zaydmulani09/mnemo
cd mnemo
docker compose up -d
docker exec mnemo-ollama ollama pull llama3
curl http://localhost:8080/health
The binary path is cargo install --path crates/mnemo-api, then mnemo-api with the LLM variables set for Ollama, or for OpenAI with MNEMO_LLM_BASE_URL=https://api.openai.com/v1, MNEMO_LLM_API_KEY, MNEMO_LLM_MODEL and MNEMO_LLM_PROVIDER=openai. The Python SDK installs with pip install mnemo-sdk and offers MnemoClient and AsyncMnemoClient with ingest and get_context methods. A CLI installs with cargo install --path crates/mnemo-cli and provides mnemo ingest, search, entities, entity <uuid> --neighbors, chunks, health, stats and wipe (which asks for confirmation unless --yes is passed), plus --server to target a non-default server.
The code is four Rust crates: mnemo-core (extraction, graph operations, retrieval engine and DB layer), mnemo-api (an Axum REST API), mnemo-cli and mnemo-bench.
By design this trades the usual Python daemon and naive context dump for a compiled binary and ranked graph expansion at retrieval time. With the Python SDK, MnemoClient calls are client.ingest("I'm building a Rust vector database called vecdb") and client.get_context("what am I working on?"), and the async AsyncMnemoClient takes a session_id on both calls. The server is MIT licensed.

mnemo
Local-first AI memory layer for any LLM. Persistent knowledge graph, entity extraction, semantic retrieval - no cloud required.
What is mnemo?
LLM apps built on custom pipelines have no persistent memory between sessions. mnemo is a local sidecar that extracts entities, builds a knowledge graph, and injects scored context back into your prompts - no cloud, no Python runtime, no vendor lock-in.
mnemo is a sidecar service that watches every conversation you feed it, extracts named entities and relationships using an LLM, builds a persistent knowledge graph in SQLite, and injects relevant context back into future prompts - automatically, in under 50ms. It works with Ollama (fully local, free), OpenAI, Anthropic, or any OpenAI-compatible API. It ships as a single static binary with zero cloud dependency.
How it works
your app
│
▼
POST /ingest ──► entity extraction (LLM) ──► knowledge graph (SQLite + petgraph)
│
POST /retrieve ◄── scoring + ranking ◄── graph traversal + full-text search
│
▼
context_prompt ──► inject into your LLM prompt
- You POST raw text to
/ingest(a conversation turn, a document, a note). - mnemo sends it to your configured LLM and extracts entities (people, tools, places, concepts) and the relationships between them.
- Entities are deduplicated by name+type, aliases are merged, and everything is written to SQLite. The in-memory petgraph is updated atomically.
- On POST
/retrieve, mnemo runs a 6-stage pipeline: full-text chunk search → entity name search → graph expansion (BFS over the knowledge graph) → relation filter → score+rank → assemble acontext_promptstring. - You inject
context_promptinto your LLM's system prompt. Done.
Why mnemo
There are a lot of AI memory tools. Here's what makes mnemo different:
| mnemo | Most alternatives | |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime | Single Rust binary | Python daemon |
| Storage | SQLite, survives restarts | In-memory or cloud |
| Graph layer | petgraph, multi-hop traversal | None |
| Cloud dependency | Zero | Required or optional |
| LLM backend | Any OpenAI-compatible | Often locked to one |
| Retrieval | Scored + ranked, graph-expanded | Naive context dump |
mnemo is not for everyone. If you're using a managed agent harness that handles memory for you, you don't need it. mnemo is for developers building custom LLM pipelines who need persistent, structured, local memory they fully control.
The graph layer is the real differentiator - entities are deduplicated across sessions, relationships are weighted and traversed at query time, and graph-expanded results score at 0.5x so direct matches always rank higher than inferred ones.
