Overview

Strategic SEO Planning

A skill that builds a complete SEO strategy - competitive analysis, site architecture, content calendar, and a 4-phase implementation roadmap - for a new or existing site. Use it when planning a multi-month SEO strategy spanning content, architecture, and phased implementation, not for a one-time point-in-time audit.

What it does

This skill builds a complete SEO strategy or roadmap rather than a point-in-time audit. It runs a discovery phase (business type, target audience, competitors, goals, current site assessment, budget/timeline, KPIs), then a competitive analysis identifying the top 5 competitors and their content strategy, schema usage, technical setup, keyword gaps, E-E-A-T signals, and estimated domain authority. It designs site architecture using an industry-specific template loaded from an assets directory (SaaS, local-service, e-commerce, publisher, agency, or a generic fallback), planning URL hierarchy, content pillars, internal linking, and a quality-gated sitemap structure. It builds a content strategy (gaps vs competitors, page types and counts, blog/resource topics and publishing cadence, an E-E-A-T building plan, a prioritized content calendar) and a technical foundation plan (hosting/performance requirements, per-page-type schema plan, Core Web Vitals baseline targets, AI search readiness, mobile-first considerations). It produces a 4-phase implementation roadmap: Foundation (weeks 1-4: technical setup, core pages, essential schema, analytics), Expansion (weeks 5-12: primary content, blog launch, internal linking, local SEO if applicable), Scale (weeks 13-24: advanced content, link building, GEO optimization, performance), and Authority (months 7-12: thought leadership, PR, advanced schema, continuous optimization). Deliverables are five documents - SEO-STRATEGY.md, COMPETITOR-ANALYSIS.md, CONTENT-CALENDAR.md, IMPLEMENTATION-ROADMAP.md, and SITE-STRUCTURE.md - plus a KPI target table (organic traffic, keyword rankings, domain authority, indexed pages, Core Web Vitals) tracked at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. If DataForSEO MCP tools are available, it can pull real competitor domain data, traffic estimates, keyword volume/difficulty, and local business listings to ground the plan in live data.

When to use - and when NOT to

Use it when building an SEO strategy or roadmap - for a new or existing site - that spans content, architecture, and phased implementation together, rather than requesting a one-time audit. If the business type is unrecognized or no matching industry template exists, it falls back to the generic template and notes the substitution rather than failing; if no website URL is provided, it proceeds in new-site planning mode and skips the current-site assessment and competitive gap analysis that require a live URL.

Inputs and outputs

Inputs: business type, target audience, competitors (if known), an existing site URL (optional), budget/timeline constraints, and KPIs.
Outputs: an SEO strategy document, a competitor analysis, a content calendar, a phased implementation roadmap, a site structure document, and a KPI target table across baseline/3/6/12-month checkpoints.

Who it's for

SEO leads and marketing teams building a multi-month SEO strategy for a new or existing site who need architecture, content, and phased implementation planned together rather than a standalone audit.
