Overview

Popup CRO

Designs high-converting, respectful popup strategy covering trigger selection, copy frameworks, close behavior, and frequency/compliance rules. Use when designing a popup's purpose, trigger, copy, or targeting/frequency rules.

What it does

Designs high-converting, respectful popup and modal interruption patterns that capture value at the right moment without annoying users, harming trust, or violating SEO/accessibility guidelines. Covers strategy, copy, triggers, and rules - not the form inside the popup (form-cro) or the surrounding page (page-cro).

When to use - and when NOT to

Use this skill when designing a popup's purpose, trigger timing, copy, or frequency/targeting rules. Not a fit for optimizing the form fields inside a popup (form-cro) or the page the popup appears on (page-cro). Requires an initial assessment first: the popup's single purpose (email capture, lead magnet, discount, exit intent, announcement, or feedback), current state (existing popup, conversion rate, triggers, complaints, mobile vs. desktop behavior), and audience/context (traffic source, new vs. returning, funnel stage).

Inputs and outputs

Four non-negotiable core principles: timing matters more than design, value must be understood within 3 seconds, respect (easy dismissal, clear intent, restraint) is itself a conversion lever, and each popup should have exactly one job.

Six trigger strategies are compared: time-based (30-60 seconds of active engagement, not an arbitrary 5-second delay, best for broad list building), scroll-based (25-50% depth indicating engagement, best for long content), exit intent (cursor movement toward browser UI on desktop, back button/upward scroll on mobile, best for e-commerce/lead recovery), click-triggered (highest intent, zero interruption cost, best for lead magnets/demos), session/page count (best for comparison/research behavior), and behavior-based (pricing page visits, cart abandonment, best for high-intent personalization).

Six popup types each get specific requirements: email capture (specific benefit not generic "Subscribe," email-only field, clear frequency expectation), lead magnet (preview of what's delivered, minimal fields, instant delivery), discount/promotion (clear incentive, single-use/limited, obvious application), exit intent (acknowledge the exit, different offer than the entry popup, objection handling), announcement banner (one message, dismissible, time-bound), and slide-in (non-blocking, easy dismiss, good for secondary CTAs).

Copy frameworks cover headline patterns (benefit, question, social proof, curiosity), subheadlines (clarifying value, reducing fear, setting expectations), CTA buttons (first-person, specific phrasing over generic "Submit"/"Learn More"), and neutral, non-manipulative decline copy ("No thanks," "Maybe later"). Design/UX rules specify a fixed visual hierarchy (headline, value prop, action, close option) and mandatory close behavior (visible X, click-outside-closes, ESC key, large mobile tap target), plus mobile-specific rules avoiding full-screen blockers in favor of bottom slide-ups.

Frequency and targeting rules cap popups at once per session with a 7-30 day cooldown after dismissal, target by visitor type/traffic source/page relevance while excluding converters, and hard-exclude checkout, signup flows, and other critical conversion steps. Compliance guidance covers accessibility (keyboard navigation, focus trapping, screen-reader compatibility, sufficient contrast), privacy (clear consent language, no pre-checked opt-ins), and Google's interstitial guidelines (intrusive mobile interstitials are risky; cookie notices, age gates, and banners are allowed).

Measurement guidance tracks impression rate, conversion rate, close rate, time to close, and pre-dismiss engagement, with directional benchmarks (email popup 2-5%, exit intent 3-10%, click-triggered 10%+). Required output format specifies a per-popup recommendation (type, goal, trigger, targeting, frequency, full copy, design notes, mobile behavior), a multiple-popup strategy with conflict/suppression rules when applicable, and test hypotheses. Flags common mistakes: showing too early, generic "Subscribe" copy, no clear value proposition, hard-to-close popups, overlapping popups, ignoring mobile UX, and treating popups as a substitute for fixing the underlying page.

Integrations

Composes with form-cro (form optimization inside the popup), page-cro (surrounding page optimization), email-sequence (post-conversion follow-up), and ab-test-setup (safe popup variant testing).

Who it's for

Growth and CRO practitioners designing popup strategy who need concrete trigger selection, copy frameworks, and compliance-safe frequency/targeting rules rather than a generic "add a popup" recommendation.

Type: Exit Intent
Trigger: cursor toward browser UI
Decline copy: "No thanks"
