Why it matters

Produce structured research notes that preserve the original text's own logic while systematically comparing it to CrossFrame concepts, identifying alignments, conflicts, and feedback questions without collapsing either framework into the other.

Outcomes

What it gets done

01

Extract the source text's core questions and arguments in its own terms

02

Map relationships between source concepts and CrossFrame framework elements

03

Identify what can and cannot be absorbed between the two frameworks

04

Generate feedback questions that challenge or extend CrossFrame theory

Overview

CrossFrame Notebook

CrossFrame Notebook is a Chinese-language research-notes skill that reads a book, theory, or article on its own terms first, then maps its relation, difference, conflict, and absorbability against the CrossFrame framework, ending with feedback questions for further research. It is not a book summarizer and forbids fabricated citations, page numbers, or author views. Use it when crossframe-suite routes book/theory/article research-note work, or the user names it directly - keeping the original text and CrossFrame's own concepts visibly distinct.

What it does

CrossFrame Notebook does bidirectional reading of a book, theory, or article against the CrossFrame framework, in three deliberate steps: first it restores the source text or theory on its own terms - its own problem-awareness, concepts, and argument chain - without importing CrossFrame's vocabulary. Second, it asks how that source relates to, differs from, conflicts with, and can or cannot be absorbed by CrossFrame. Third, it turns the source's own counter-pressure on CrossFrame into open questions for continued research, rather than treating CrossFrame as the final word. It is explicitly not a "book summarizer" and not a way to "wrap CrossFrame text over the original" - if the user supplies only a title or a vague memory of a text, the skill must mark that source boundary rather than invent page numbers, quotes, editions, or an author's views. A compliant note keeps a fixed minimum structure: the reading object and source boundary, the original text's own central question, its own key concepts or argument chain, its relation to CrossFrame, its difference from CrossFrame, any conflict or tension with CrossFrame, what is absorbable, what is not absorbable, feedback questions for CrossFrame, and a citation/verification boundary - even a maximally condensed note must keep at minimum the relation/difference/absorbable/non-absorbable/feedback skeleton. Output defaults to templates/research-notebook.md, adding templates/source-ledger.md whenever sources need to be tracked, in a register the skill describes as research-note style: clear, restrained, and verifiable, where any judgment must be tied to textual evidence, a stated source boundary, and a condition under which it could be withdrawn.

When to use - and when NOT to

Use it when crossframe-suite routes explicit CrossFrame work into notes on books, theories, articles, excerpts, bidirectional reading, absorption, or conflict mapping, and when original text and CrossFrame concepts need to be kept visibly distinct. Do not use it independently unless the user explicitly names this sibling skill, and if the research is headed toward becoming an essay, teaching material, a debate, or a review, crossframe-suite/SKILL.md should do the overall dispatch first - this skill is responsible only for reading/theory/article research notes. It does not replace crossframe's reality diagnosis or crossframe-essay's essay writing. The skill treats several outcomes as hard failures that must be self-corrected: producing only a book summary with no CrossFrame comparison or feedback questions; wrapping CrossFrame vocabulary over the text until the original's own problem-awareness disappears; fabricating citations, page numbers, editions, quotes, or an author's views; writing relation without difference (or vice versa); writing "absorbable" as wholesale adoption or "non-absorbable" as devaluing the source; turning a theoretical comparison into a reality diagnosis, personal judgment, ideological labeling, or a substitute for domain expertise; and using a search summary, secondhand introduction, or the model's own memory to pretend the original text has actually been read.

Inputs and outputs

On every trigger it reads adjacent canonical material first rather than copying it wholesale into its own output, quoting only the necessary rule names, concept names, and relative paths: crossframe/SKILL.md and crossframe/references/read-routing-map.md; for reading objects touching high responsibility, public institutions, intimate relationships, long-term change, framework governance, AI reality-checks, weak signals or opacity, irreversibility, tool-based claims, metaphor/source transparency, or article output, it also reads crossframe/references/continuity-bundles.md and applies crossframe/worksheets/source-continuity-check.md as needed - an incomplete continuity read forces the note to downgrade. It reuses the v5-read-state-capsule template and runs crossframe/worksheets/source-anchor-integrity-check.md for high-responsibility, public, AI/process-artifact, lifecycle, or non-withdrawable scenarios, falling back to crossframe/SKILL.md rather than inventing its own source routing if that capsule is missing. It then reads its own protocols/notebook-reading-protocol.md, protocols/bidirectional-reading-protocol.md, and protocols/source-integrity-protocol.md, plus whatever it needs from templates/, references/, and examples/ for the task at hand. Supporting reference files include references/absorption-taxonomy.md (the relation/difference/conflict/absorbable/non-absorbable/feedback classification), references/notebook-quality-gates.md (the compliance gate for a valid note), references/source-boundary-rules.md (source credibility and anti-fabrication rules), worked examples of book theory, article excerpts, public theory, and failure cases under examples/, and a smoke-test suite at evals/crossframe-notebook-smoke-tests.md.

Integrations

Ships as an Agent Skills spec-ready package in the same repository as crossframe, crossframe-critical, crossframe-debate, crossframe-essay, crossframe-public, and crossframe-suite, and is loaded only through crossframe-suite's own routing rather than invoked directly by a user in normal operation.

Who it's for

Researchers and writers who want a disciplined way to read a book, theory, or article against the CrossFrame framework without either flattening the source into a generic summary or overwriting its own arguments with CrossFrame's vocabulary - useful for building a source-anchored research trail before that reading turns into an essay, teaching material, or a debate elsewhere in the CrossFrame suite.
