Overview

Cold Email Writing

A skill for writing cold outbound emails and follow-up sequences that sound like a thoughtful peer, using research signals, tested frameworks, and short internal-looking subject lines. Use for outbound prospecting or cold follow-ups to people with no existing relationship, or to sharpen subject lines, openings, CTAs, and personalization.

What it does

Writes outbound cold emails and follow-up sequences designed to read like they came from a sharp, thoughtful human rather than a template-driven sales machine. Before writing, it checks for a .agents/product-marketing-context.md (or the older .claude/product-marketing-context.md) and reads that first, then asks only for what's still missing across five questions: who you're writing to and why them specifically, what outcome you want (meeting, reply, intro, demo), what specific problem you solve for people like them, what proof you have (a result, case study, credibility signal), and any research signals (funding, hiring, LinkedIn posts, company news, tech-stack changes). It doesn't block on missing inputs - it works with whatever signal and value prop it has and notes what would strengthen the email further. Its core writing principles: write like a peer, not a vendor (contractions, a read-aloud test); every sentence must earn its place (ruthlessly short); personalization must connect directly to the stated problem, not stand alone; lead with the reader's world so "you/your" dominates over "I/we"; and use one low-friction, interest-based ask ("Worth exploring?") rather than a direct meeting request.

When to use - and when NOT to

Use it for outbound prospecting emails or cold follow-up sequences, when the goal is getting a reply from someone with no existing relationship, or when you need sharper subject lines, openings, CTAs, or personalization. It calibrates voice to the audience - ultra-brief and peer-level for C-suite, more specific value for mid-level, precise and fluff-free for technical readers - and explicitly avoids sounding like a template with swapped fields, a pitch deck in paragraph form, an unsolicited LinkedIn DM, or an AI-generated email (it flags telltale phrases like "I hope this email finds you well," "I came across your profile," "leverage," "synergy," "best-in-class"). It is not for lifecycle or nurture sequences to existing contacts - that's the separate email-sequence skill - nor for landing pages and web copy (copywriting) or social posts (social-content).

Inputs and outputs

Inputs are the five context questions above, plus any existing product-marketing-context.md file. Output is either a single cold email or a 3-5 email follow-up sequence with increasing gaps between sends, where each email stands alone (the recipient may not have read the prior ones) and the last is a deliberate breakup email. Emails follow one of several optional shapes - Observation to Problem to Proof to Ask, Question to Value to Ask, Trigger to Insight to Ask, or Story to Bridge to Ask - or freeform if none fits. Subject lines are kept short (2-4 words), lowercase, unpunctuated, and internal-looking (e.g. "reply rates," "hiring ops") rather than pitchy. Before presenting output, it gut-checks: does it sound human read aloud, would the reader actually reply, does every sentence serve the reader rather than the sender, is the personalization tied to the problem, and is there exactly one low-friction ask.

Integrations

Draws on five reference files for supporting data rather than treating them as a checklist: benchmarks.md (reply rates, conversion funnels, common mistakes), personalization.md (a 4-level personalization system and research signals), subject-lines.md, follow-up-sequences.md (cadence, angle rotation, breakup templates), and frameworks.md (the full catalog of copywriting structures). It's designed to hand off to related skills: copywriting for landing pages, email-sequence for lifecycle/nurture sequences, social-content for LinkedIn/social posts, product-marketing-context for foundational positioning, and revops for lead scoring, routing, and pipeline management.

Who it's for

Salespeople, founders, and marketers writing cold outbound emails or follow-up sequences to prospects with no existing relationship, who want copy that reads as a genuine, specific note from a peer rather than a mail-merged template.
