Access and Interpret arXiv Papers
MCP server that fetches arXiv papers' LaTeX source, not the PDF, so an LLM can read equations and notation accurately instead of misreading a PDF.
Why it matters
Gain direct access to scientific papers from arXiv by retrieving their source LaTeX code. This asset provides precise interpretation of mathematical expressions and equations, offering superior handling of complex papers compared to PDFs.
Outcomes
What it gets done
Retrieve and process arXiv papers using source LaTeX code.
Interpret mathematical expressions and equations accurately.
Handle papers with numerous equations more effectively than PDF formats.
Integrate with MCP clients like Claude Desktop and Cursor.

Overview
arxiv-latex-mcp server
An MCP server that fetches an arXiv paper's LaTeX source, built on arxiv-to-prompt, so Claude and other MCP clients can read equations and mathematical notation accurately instead of the errors common in PDF-based paper chat. Use it when discussing an equation-heavy arXiv paper, in math, CS, or engineering, where PDF extraction tends to mangle notation and the original LaTeX preserves it correctly.
What it does
An MCP server that fetches an arXiv paper's original LaTeX source instead of its PDF, using arxiv-to-prompt to download and process the source, so Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or another MCP client can read the paper's actual equations and notation rather than whatever a PDF-to-text pipeline reconstructs. PDF chat tools commonly mangle mathematical content; working from the LaTeX source avoids that failure mode entirely for fields like computer science, mathematics, and engineering where precise notation matters.
When to use - and when NOT to
Use it when discussing a specific arXiv paper and equations or mathematical notation are central to the conversation - explaining a theorem, walking through a derivation, or asking what a particular symbol means in context. It is scoped to arXiv papers specifically, fetched by their arXiv ID; it is not a general PDF reader or a tool for papers outside arXiv, and it does not summarize or interpret the paper itself, only retrieves the source content for the LLM to reason over.
Capabilities
get_paper_prompt returns the full flattened LaTeX of a paper. get_paper_abstract returns just the abstract, useful when the full source is more than is needed. list_paper_sections lists a paper's section headings so a specific part can be targeted. get_paper_section retrieves one section by path, rather than pulling the entire paper into context. A typical use is asking a question referencing an arXiv ID directly, such as explaining the first theorem in a specific paper.
How to install
For Claude Desktop, install the .mcpb Desktop Extension by downloading it from the project's releases and double-clicking to install, with macOS, Windows, and Linux supported. For other MCP clients, run it from PyPI:
{
"mcpServers": {
"arxiv-latex-mcp": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["arxiv-latex-mcp"]
}
}
}
It can also be installed with pip install arxiv-latex-mcp and run as arxiv-latex-mcp, or via python -m arxiv_latex_mcp.
Who it's for
Researchers and students who discuss math- and equation-heavy arXiv papers with an AI assistant and need the notation read correctly, rather than reconstructed imperfectly from a PDF. The project is licensed under MIT.
Source README
arxiv-latex MCP Server
An MCP server that enables Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or other MCP clients to directly access and process arXiv papers by fetching the LaTeX source. It uses arxiv-to-prompt under the hood to handle downloading and processing the LaTeX.
Why use the LaTeX source instead of uploading PDFs? Many PDF chat applications often struggle with mathematical content and equation-heavy papers. By utilizing the original LaTeX source code from arXiv papers, the LLM can accurately understand and handle equations and notations. This approach is particularly valuable for fields like computer science, mathematics, and engineering where precise interpretation of mathematical expressions is crucial.
Installation
If you are using Claude Desktop, you can utilize Desktop Extensions by double-clicking on the .mcpb file to install.
Download the .mcpb file from here.
Supported on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Otherwise, you can run the server directly from PyPI with uvx:
{
"mcpServers": {
"arxiv-latex-mcp": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["arxiv-latex-mcp"]
}
}
}
You can also install it with pip install arxiv-latex-mcp and run arxiv-latex-mcp, or use:
python -m arxiv_latex_mcp
If you prefer to run from a local checkout, add the following configuration to your config file:
{
"mcpServers": {
"arxiv-latex-mcp": {
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"/ABSOLUTE/PATH/TO/arxiv-latex-mcp",
"run",
"python",
"-m",
"arxiv_latex_mcp"
]
}
}
}
You may need to replace the command field with the full path of uv: check this by running which uv (MacOS/Linux) or where uv (Windows).
Restart the application after saving the above.
For Claude Desktop, click on the hammer icon, and you should see the following in the list of "Available MCP tools":
get_paper_prompt- Get the full flattened LaTeX of a paperget_paper_abstract- Get just the abstractlist_paper_sections- List section headings of a paperget_paper_section- Get a specific section by path
Example
Try asking questions about a paper from arXiv, e.g., "Explain the first theorem in 2202.00395"
